How to Install SMTP Server on Windows 2008 Server OS

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service allows you to transfer e-mail messages between e-mail systems. You can add SMTP Server feature to your Windows 2008 Server and later OS using the following steps:

  1. Start “Server Manager” by going to Start –> Administrative Tools –> Server Manager. When the Server Manager window is displayed, scroll down and select “Add Features”.

  2. The “Add Features Wizard” screen will be displayed, Scroll down and select “SMTP Server” from the list. You may be prompted to install the dependencies required by this feature. Select “Add Required Role Services” button.
    Select “Next”. You will see “Introduction to Web Server (IIS)” screen.
    Select “Next”. You will see the “Role Services” that are installed on the server. Select “Next”.
    Select “Install” on the next screen and wait until the process is finished.
    Select “Close”.

  3. Verify the SMTP service by opening the “Services” MMC in Administrative Tools and make sure it is started. The service is set to start manually. Right click on the service and select Properties. Specify “Automatic” in the “Startup type” option and select “OK”.

  4. You access properties of your SMTP server by selecting the Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager from the Administrative Tools. You should first update the relay settings just so your server is not an open relay and is targeted by spammers. Right click on “SMTP Virtual Server” and select “Properties”.
    Select the “Access” tab and select “Relay” button.
    Make sure that “Only the list below” option is selected. This makes sure that only specific servers are able to send e-mail through this server.
    Select “Add” and specify the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is assigned to the local server.
    Select “OK” twice.
